Cloud-Based Airport Management

The primary objective of Project Voyage is the development and deployment in the Basque Country of a groundbreaking Airport Management Center based on cloud computing, big data and smart analytics technologies for the delivery of new applications and services to different airport agents (operators, airlines, passengers, etc.), aimed at enhancing the cost efficiency of the business and the quality of airport processes, optimizing airport security and generating new sources of revenue from an improved passenger experience.

As a product, VOYAGE seeks to make operating costs more flexible, but also addresses the issue of revenue. Although air traffic and the number of passengers in Europe are expected to rise within a period of 2 – 3 years back to their levels prior to the crisis, such crisis has produced longer-lasting, and perhaps irreversible, effects – demographic changes, new corporate expense control regulations and new habits among travelers as consumers will continue to affect airport revenue.

VOYAGE seeks to improve the economic sustainability of the airport business by way of offering innovative services intended to maximize passenger satisfaction. To achieve this, the airport must adopt an approach focused on the traveler rather than on the airline, which is the still current traditional model. As the airlines are the ones that most capitalize on the passenger experience, VOYAGE proposes the model of a closer airport-airline interrelation seeking to provide a satisfactory traveler experience throughout the entire travel chain, from origin to destination.

Objectives

The primary objective of Project VOYAGE is the development and deployment in the Basque Country of a groundbreaking Airport Management Center based on cloud computing, big data and smart analytics technologies for the delivery of new applications and services to different airport agents (operators, airlines, passengers, etc.), aimed at enhancing the cost efficiency of the business and the quality of airport processes, optimizing airport security and generating new sources of revenue from an improved passenger experience.

VOYAGE intends to define and deploy a new model of the “AIRPORT OF THE FUTURE”, based on the paradigm of Airport 3.0 or smart airport, addressing the following critical aspects:

  • Efficiency in the management of airport processes, easing the high operating costs of the technological solutions currently available in the market by implementing solutions that are more scalable and supported on paradigms that are revolutionizing other ITC-intensive systems, such as Cloud Computing.
  • A continuous improvement of airport security, turning the airport into a venue of distributed security, rather than centered on single flow control checkpoints.
  • New value-added passenger services to generate new sources of airport income within an economic context where both companies and private citizens have radically transformed their habits as consumers.

Participating Bodies

Under that perspective, the Consortium developing this project is led by Ikusi, with the participation of CBT, Lookwise, Idom, Nextel, NTS, Ormazábal and Clúster de Movilidad y Logística de Euskadi; and of the centers of Red Vasca de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación, Deustotech, Innovalia, Tecnalia and Vicomtech-IK4. Aena Airports and México City International Airport collaborate on the project.
